MANILA, Philippines — Senator Nancy Binay expressed concern on Saturday about Filipinos seemingly becoming less interested in activities celebrating the 1986 Edsa People Power Revolution.

This year’s Edsa People Power celebration is not a holiday as it falls on a Sunday, the Office of the President earlier said.

“Syempre nababahala din tayo kasi during that moment, ‘yung buong mundo was admiring us for that peaceful revolution,” Binay said over a Radyo 630 interview.

(Of course, we’re also concerned because, during that moment, the whole world was admiring us for that peaceful revolution.)

“Sana unti-unti na maituro siya sa next generation kung ano ba yung nangyari during that period in our history, kasi ‘di ba whether we like it or not, nangyari naman talaga ‘yung Edsa Revolution,” she added.

(I hope it will gradually be taught to the next generation what really happened during that period in our history because, whether we like it or not, the Edsa Revolution did happen.)

Binay said that she will not attend any Edsa People Power anniversary rites and has never participated in one, but stressed that it was important that the public live out the lessons learned from the historic revolution.

Furthermore, the senator also mentioned that her father, former Vice President Jejomar Binay, an active human rights lawyer during Marcos Sr.’s regime, is doing well and is in good health.

“Okay naman siya. Once in a while medyo naiinip kasi hindi siya sanay na hindi siya ganoon kabusy. But he is okay. He is 81, nakaka 20,000 steps pa din and nagcoconcentrate din sya sa law school namin sa University of Makati,” Binay said when asked about her father’s well-being.

(He’s okay. Once in a while, he gets a bit impatient because he’s not used to not being that busy. But he’s okay. He’s 81, still manages to take 20,000 steps, and he also concentrates on his law studies at our University of Makati.)

She also said that her father is probably not running in the 2025 midterm elections.

“Parang hindi naman. Option pa din naman niya ‘yan,” Binay said.
