PH ranks 115th in 2023 corruption index, improves score by 1 point

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines ranked 115 among 180 countries in the 2023 Corruption Perceptions Index of international social group Transparency International.

In the report published on Tuesday, the country got a 34/100 in its CPI score, which is used to gauge how corrupt a country’s public sector is perceived by experts and those from the business sector, with 0 meaning “highly corrupt” and 100 meaning “very clean.”

The country’s CPI score had an increase of one point from its CPI score in 2022, where it scored 33.

Over the last decade, the Philippines got its highest score of 38 in 2014, while it garnered its lowest scores in 2021 and 2022 at 33.

The Philippines also shared the same 2023 CPI score with its neighboring country Indonesia, as well as Ecuador, Indonesia, Malawi, Sri Lanka, and Turkey.

Meanwhile, among 180 countries, Denmark scored the highest CPI score at 90 and took rank one, followed by Finland, New Zealand, Norway, and Singapore, which took ranks two to five, respectively.

On the other hand, Somalia got the lowest rank and a CPI score of 11.

The report said that only 28 countries improved their corruption levels over the last twelve years, while 34 countries have “significantly worsened.”

“Against this backdrop, this year’s Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) shows that only 28 of the 180 countries measured by this index have improved their corruption levels over the last twelve years, and 34 countries have significantly worsened,” it said.
