NDRRMC confirms 8 deaths, validates 7 others in Davao de Oro landslide

The number of people who died in Monkayo town, Davao de Oro province, due to a landslide triggered by heavy rains from a shear line has reportedly climbed to 15, but seven of which are being validated according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

MANILA, Philippines — The number of people who died in Monkayo town, Davao de Oro province, due to a landslide triggered by heavy rains from a shear line, has reportedly climbed to 15, but seven of which are being validated according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

In a situational report on Sunday afternoon, NDRRMC said that of the 15, it has confirmed the death of eight people and is still validating reports on the death of the seven others.

“A total of 15 dead, five injured, and zero missing persons were reported, where eight are validated. Please note that changes were made in the reported casualties of Davao de Oro in reference to the Progress Reports submitted. Kindly see the sitrep for more information. Thank you,” NDRRMC said in a Viber message to reporters.

The agency likewise reported that the landslide affected 349,236 persons or 83,174 families.

Of the figure, 3,664 families or 11,797 individuals are currently inside about 60 evacuation centers, while 844 families or 3,651 persons are taking shelter elsewhere.

Moreover, 27 road sections within the province were affected, 11 of which are impassable roads, while four are bridges.

NDRRMC also reported that seven cities and municipalities experienced power interruption, wherein only two areas already restored electricity.

To aid affected communities, NDRRMC said the government has so far distributed P15,002,554 worth of assistance.
