Pagasa: Rains may ease in Southern Luzon, downpours to persist elsewhere

MANILA, Philippines – Filipinos in some parts of Luzon may experience a break from continuous rains because the shear line is longer affecting several places.

This is the report of Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) at 11 a.m. on Sunday.

A shear line is a convergence of warm and cold wind which brought torrential downpours over portions of Bicol, Western Visayas, and Eastern Visayas.

“The shear line is no longer affecting the eastern section of Southern Luzon,” the state weather bureau said.

However, it was quick to point out that the northeast monsoon, locally known as amihan, will continue to dampen several provinces.

“The northeast monsoon will still bring rains over Mainland Cagayan, Isabela, Aurora, and [the] northern portion of Quezon in the next 24 hours,” the bulletin read.

In an earlier advisory, the weather bureau said Aurora, Quezon, Rizal, Laguna, Oriental Mindoro, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, and Catanduanes will have overcast skies with scattered rain showers due to the shear line.

Meanwhile, the rest of Luzon, including Metro Manila, was predicted to have generally fair weather, with chances of isolated rain showers and localized thunderstorms.

National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Sunday reported the combined effects of the shear line and a low-pressure area have affected over one million people.

It previously said the shear line brought huge amounts of rain over Oriental Mindoro, Quezon, Bicol, and Eastern Visayas.
