NDRRMC: People affected by recent weather events top 1 million

The NDRRMC says the number of people affected by recent weather events has surpassed 1 million

MANILA, Philippines — The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said the latest count of individuals affected by recent weather events has reached more than a million.

The NDRRMC’s situational report released Sunday showed that Tropical Depression Ineng (international name: Yun-Yeung); Typhoons Hanna (international name: Haiku) and Goring (international name: Saola), and the boosted southwest monsoon – locally known as habagat – now affected 1,086,837 individuals or 292,111 families.

This number included 2,829 displaced individuals from 2,363 barangays across the country. Of the 2,829, evacuation centers were accommodating 2,130 while 699 were taking shelter elsewhere or outside evacuation centers.

Different local government units (LGUs) have set up evacuation centers in Regions 1 (Ilocos), 3 (Central Luzon), and 6 (Western Visayas); Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon); and Mimaropa (Mindoro Oriental and Occidental, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan).

Reported deaths stood at two people and one of them is still being validated by the NDRRMC. Three people were reported injured while two others were reported missing following the weather events.

According to the NDRRMC, typhoon-affected families have already received P84,229,621 worth of assistance, mostly from the Department of Social Welfare and Development and various LGUs.
