Poe hoping for consultations to result in ‘truly humane’ modernization plan

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Transportation and various groups from the transport sector should hold consultations to develop a “truly humane” public utility vehicle modernization program.

This was according to Senator Grace Poe, chairperson of the Senate committee on public services,  as she welcomed on Wednesday the dialogue between Malacañang officials and transport leaders that resulted in the lifting of the transport strike.

“Some requirements of the modernization program have been like the sword of Damocles hanging over the heads of our drivers and operators for years,” Poe said in a statement.

“We hope the Department of Transportation and transport groups can get off to a fresh start and embark on thorough consultations to craft a truly humane, realistic and effective modernization program,” she added.

Poe further said that the public’s interest in the transport woe is vital as this will lead to an improved transportation system for the public.

“Our common interest and vigilance on this issue are still a must as this will pave the way for a better, more efficient transportation system for all Filipinos,” she said.

Transport groups scheduled a week-long strike from March 6 to 12 to protest the traditional jeepney phaseout deadline initially set on June 30.

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board then extended the deadline for traditional jeepney phaseout on December 31.

The groups ended their protest midway, resuming operations on Wednesday following a meeting in Malacañang.
