Heavy rains trigger landslides, class suspensions in Bicol

LEGAZPI CITY — Continuous heavy rains triggered landslides and forced local governments to suspend classes on Friday, Jan. 13, in the Bicol region.

In Catanduanes province, classes at all levels in public and private schools were suspended in Virac and San Miguel towns due to widespread rain showers and thunderstorms.

Classes were also suspended in Guinobatan, Polangui, Camalig, Pio Duran, Daraga, and Legazpi City in Albay province.

Mayor Joseling Aguas Jr. of Sto. Domingo, also in Albay, suspended classes in Barangays Alimsog, Buhatan, Salvacion, and Calayucay due to the threat of landslides.

Aguas said school heads may suspend classes, while the residents were advised not to cross swollen rivers and waterways.

He also barred small boats from sailing due to the rough seas.

Debris from a landslide covered a portion of the road in Calayucay going to Salvacion.

Disaster officials were immediately deployed for the clearing operation.

Classes in elementary and high schools were also suspended in Masbate City, while at all levels in Batuan and Mobo towns in Masbate province.

In Sorsogon province, classes in elementary and high schools were also suspended in Gubat, Bulan, and Pilar towns, while classes at all levels were canceled in Sorsogon City.

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) Southern Luzon said an orange warning was raised in Sorsogon at 8 a.m., which meant flooding and landslides were threatening the high-risk areas.

Pagasa said moderate to heavy rains were affecting Catanduanes, Albay, and Camarines Sur.

As of 3 a.m., a low-pressure area was located some 140 kilometers east of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur. INQ
