First lady named Chief Girl Scout

First lady Liza Araneta Marcos on Thursday pledged to help shape the mental, emotional and social qualities of young Filipino women as she was formally named the country’s Chief Girl Scout. “It is a title that I will truly be proud of… not only because of its meaningful history but more so because it will allow me to help our young women cultivate the same values that I learned when I was a Girl Scout in school,” Mrs. Marcos said during the investiture ceremony in Malacañang. She pledged to contribute to nation-building as Chief Girl Scout through promoting environmentalism and providing guidance to young women in their formative years. According to the Girl Scouts of the Philippines, there are 800,000 girl scouts in the country. The organization was chartered through Commonwealth Act No. 542 in May 1940 through the efforts of founder, suffragette and war hero Josefa Llanes-Escoda. —JEROME ANING
