MANILA, Philippines  — The Department of Health (DOH) said on Tuesday that 60 percent of current severe and critical cases of COVID-19— which have been steadily increasing in the past weeks— were unvaccinated or only partially vaccinated individuals.

According to DOH officer-in-charge Maria Rosario Vergeire during a press conference on Tuesday, the number or the percentage of severe and critical infections has increased in the past weeks.

“We are noting that most of these severe and critical 60 percent are unvaccinated or just partially vaccinated,” said Vergeire.

She, however, noted that despite the increase, the percentage has yet to breach the 10 percent threshold.

“Although hindi natin gustong maliitin ‘yung number na ‘yon dahil nakikita natin na may angking pagtaas sa severe and critical (Although we don’t want to underestimate that number because we see that there is an increase in severe and critical),” said Vergeire.

The acting DOH chief then reiterated the department’s call to the public to get inoculated with the booster dose of COVID-19 vaccine to halt the increase in severe, and critical cases.

“‘Yun pa rin ang panawagan, magpabakuna tayo para hindi magtuloy tuloy ang pagtaas ng malulubhang sakit sa ating bansa,” said Vergeire.

(The call is still the same, let’s get vaccinated so that the increase in serious infections in our country does not continue.)

“Ang sinasabi po ng ating projections na maaring tumaas ang pagkakaospital in the coming months kung hindi tataas ang booster doses ng ating kababayan,” she further warned.

(Our projections say that hospitalizations may increase in the coming months if the booster doses of our compatriots do not increase.)

According to the latest data released by the DOH on Monday, active critical and severe cases are currently at 811.
