Heavy rains trigger landslide, floods in Albay towns

LEGAZPI CITY—Heavy rains on Monday triggered floods and landslides in Daraga, Camalig, and Guinobatan towns in Albay province.

Joy Maravillas, head of the disaster risk reduction and management office (DRRMO) in Guinobatan, said Tuesday, August 9, that the continuous rains damaged a 20-meter portion of the slope protection structure in Barangay Morera, causing debris to fall into the road at around 5 p.m.

The road was rendered impassable, but was cleared at 10:50 p.m.

Maravillas said damage to infrastructure was estimated at P5 million.

A minor landslide also occurred around 4 p.m. along the Maharlika road at Malabog village in Daraga when the same thunderstorm softened the soil.

Department of Public Works and Highways personnel immediately conducted a clearing operation to avoid vehicular accidents.

The traffic built up in the two areas, but all roads were passable, disaster officials said.

The downpour that started at noon also caused heavy flooding in Tinago, Ilawod, Tagaytay, and Bariw villages in Camalig.

Rommel Negrete, head of Camalig DRRMO, said the river in the area started to overflow around 2:30 p.m., submerging houses into knee-deep flood.

The flood started to subside at the night.

“The families did not evacuate because most of the houses were elevated,” Negrete said.

In the initial report, 73 families were affected in Tagaytay.

Negrete said Tuesday that the disaster officials would distribute food packs to the affected families, while assessment in other villages was ongoing.

No one was hurt in the landslide and flooding incidents.
