Sonsona to move up in weight, duels Fulgencio tonight in Lapu

07:42 AM March 17, 2012

SGG Promotions big boss Samson Gello-ani is planning to allow his ward, former WBO world super flyweight champion Marvin “The Marvelous” Sonsona to fight in the featherweight division to prevent a possible clash with compatriot Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire who rules the bantamweight class.
During yesterday’s final press conference and official weigh-in for ‘Pinoy Knockout’ at the J Center Mall in Mandaue, Gello-ani said that he is seriously considering the planned weight transfer of his star boxer.
“I think he is comfortable in the featherweight class, I know that this plan would mean a longer time for Sonsona to win another title but we don’t want to fight Donaire,” said Gello-ani.
But before Gello-ani could execute his plans, Sonsona has to prove himself again as he tangles with Carlos “El Flaco” Fulgencio of the Dominican Republic tonight in a non-title main event of ‘Pinoy Knockout I’ at the Hoops Dome in Lapu-Lapu City.
Sonsona and Fulgencio tipped the scales at 128 and 125.75 lbs, respectively which breached the division limit of 125 lbs. However, since the bout is a non-title duel, the fight will push through.
“Andam naman ko bisan daghan kayo ug distractions nahitabo sa akong training, focus kayo ko aning awaya, di lang ta mokumpiyansa jud,” said Sonsona.
“ I am prepared and I come here to absolutely win,” countered Fulgencio who once fought world champion Abner Mares.
If Sonsona wins, he will fight again this May in the undercard of IBF lightflyweight champion Johnriel Casimero’s defense at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino. He is also set to leave for Oxnard, California to train in Sampson Lewkowicz’ camp.
SALUDAR WILLING TO FACE VILORIA
Meanwhile, WBO world Youth Flyweight champion Froilan “The Sniper” Saludar vowed to beat Mexican Alejandro “Terrible” Morales in the card’s co-main event.
Saludar weighed in at 111lbs and Morales at 112lbs. Saludar said he is willing to face anyone including fellow Filipinos WBO flyweight champion Brian Viloria and No. 1 contender Milan “El Metodico” Melindo just to win a world title.
“Andam man ko mo away nila, siguro taas-taas pud ko ug chance makadaog basta sakto lang jud ko ug training,” said the undefeated Saludar.
“I am sure that I will win against Saludar, I will do my best to win this title,” said Morales.
In the main supporting bout, Adonis Cabalquinto came in at a perfect 140lbs while his opponent Dan Nazareno came in a pound lighter for their Philippine Junior Welterweight fight, while WBO Asia Pacific Youth Superflyweight champion Jerwin Ancajas and challenger Mark Anthony Geraldo both weighed in at 115lbs.
Other bouts pit Edward Penerio vs. Albert Alcoy, Virgilio Silvano vs. Jay-r Calunsad, Ernie Sanchez vs. Eman Labanza, Jordan Catubay vs. Jerome Baja and Jack Tepora vs. Michael Dopol.
‘Pinoy Knockout’ will be telecast live over AKTV Channel 13 at 9 p.m.
