DA bans entry of livestock from Indonesia

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Agriculture (DA) has temporarily banned the entry of foot and mouth disease (FMD)-susceptible animals and their products from Indonesia effective immediately following a reported outbreak in this country.
“There is a need to prevent the entry of FMD virus to protect the health of the local livestock population,” the DA said in an order.
Under the law, the DA is authorized to prevent the entry of animals, animal effects, parts or products from any country with dangerous communicable animal disease.
“All shipments coming from Indonesia that are in transit/loaded/accepted unto port before the official communication of this order to the Indonesian authorities shall be allowed provided the products were slaughtered/produced before March 29, 2022,” the directive read.
Indonesian authorities reported on May 9 an outbreak of FMD in Jawa Timur and Aceh affecting domestic cattle.
