Comelec: 56% of voting population are aged 18 to 41
MANILA, Philippines — Fifty-six percent of the voting population are voters aged 18 to 41, Commissions on Elections (Comelec) spokesperson James Jimenez said Tuesday as he stressed the importance of the youth’s voice in the May elections.
According to Jimenez, 37 million out of 65 million total registered voters are aged 18 to 41.
“Meaning to say ‘yung projections natin (our projections) previously that the youth would account for about 52 percent of the voting population appears to be fairly accurate,” he said in an online press briefing.
“Of course hindi naman natin sasabihin na hanggang 41 ang youth no (we are not saying that those aged 41 years old are still youth) but it’s within that range, right? Between 31 to 41 pwede natin sabihin na abot na sila diyan, and that would account for 56 percent actually. Eighteen to 41-year-olds account for 56 percent of the voting population,” he added.
Jimenez also expressed confidence that the huge number of registered voters within the said age group would be beneficial for the country.
“It’s a very interesting development. It’s good for the country,” said Jimenez.
“I think it’s important for everyone to know that the youths are prime movers of this coming elections,” the Comelec official noted.
