BACOLOD CITY—The city council of Bacolod is urging the Commission on Elections to provide separate voting venues for senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and those with comorbidities during the May 9 elections.

The appeal, contained in a resolution authored by Councilor Renecito Novero, was unanimously approved by the council during its regular session on Wednesday, Jan. 5.

Novero, in the resolution, pointed out that COVID-19 and its variants continue to plague the world, the Philippines, and Bacolod in unpredictable proportions.

“It is generally considered that senior citizens and those suffering from certain comorbidities are of weaker immune system and resistance against the virulence of this virus and its variants,” he said.

Thousands of electors would most likely flock to polling places on May 9 that would lengthen the waiting time of voters, he said.

“Such overcrowding situation can be unhealthful and risky to the senior citizens and persons suffering from comorbidities … as well as agonizing and unfriendly to persons with disabilities,” he said.
