MANILA, Philippines — The state weather bureau said the low-pressure area that is projected to arrive at Mindanao around Christmas time has around a “30 to 40 percent” chance of developing into a tropical depression.

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) issued a clarification amid speculations sparking fear in social media since the weather disturbance will also traverse in some areas still reeling from the onslaught of Typhoon Odette (international name: Rai).

“To prevent unwanted panic on the part of the public, we would like to make the following clarifications,” Pagasa said.

The LPA has a 30-40 percent chance of becoming a tropical depression and might bring rains in eastern Mindanao, according to the government weather service.

To date, the typhoon is located 2,300 kilometers east of Mindanao and does not currently affect the weather condition in the country.

“In this regard, the public is advised to undertake precautionary measures, continue monitoring for updates and remain vigilant against unofficial information coming from unverified sources,” Pagasa said.
