EU, member states stand in ‘full solidarity’ with PH through vax donations

MANILA, Philippines — Amid the pandemic, the European Union (EU) and its member states stood in “full solidarity” with the Philippines by donating around 14.5 million COVID-19 vaccines from December 13 to 15.

During the said dates, a total of 14,525,700 various COVID-19 vaccines will be donated by six EU countries namely the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, France, Spain, and Austria.

“Developing, sharing, and distributing vaccines against COVID-19 is among the most pressing challenges we face today,” EU Ambassador to the Philippines Luc Véron said in a statement on Wednesday.

“By delivering this large amount of vaccines at a critical period, the EU and its Member States stand in full solidarity with the Philippines. It is in our mutual interest to confront this global pandemic and end it as soon as possible,” he added.

The following is the breakdown of the 14.5 million doses donated by the six-member states:

  • Netherlands – 7,538,400 Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 vaccine doses
  • Germany – 3,696,900 Moderna COVID-19 vaccine doses
  • Sweden – 1,512,000 Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 vaccine doses
  • France – 1,058,400 Moderna COVID-19 vaccine doses
  • Spain – 453,600 Moderna COVID-19 vaccine doses
  • Austria – 266,400 Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 vaccine doses

According to the EU, around 9.9 million more COVID-19 vaccine doses are expected to be donated by its member states by the end of the year.

The anticipated arrival will be coursed through the Covax Facility, the global initiative to provide fair and equitable access to the COVID-19 vaccines.

To date, the EU and its member states are the biggest COVID-19 vaccine donors across the globe.

The union’s member states have given over 350 million COVID-19 vaccine doses to low- and middle-income nations. Most of which was shared through the Covax Facility.
