Isko Moreno vows to build cold storage facility to avoid loss of profit to farmers

MANILA, Philippines — Manila Mayor Isko Moreno, a presidential aspirant in the 2022 elections, vowed on Saturday to build storage facilities to avoid wasting produce that would cause farmers to lose their profits.

“Food security is the number one threat to national security,” Moreno said during an online town hall meeting with Filipino workers in Australia.

“That’s why we are saying that we would build cold storage facilities regionally to our post-harvest facilities for fruits, vegetables, and fish in order to protect the value of our crops,” Moreno said in Filipino.

He noted that vendors who could not sell their fish would turn it into “daing” — dried fish — to prevent them from spoiling.

On the other hand, farmers would rather throw away vegetables than risk having them spoiled in transit to Manila.
