PSA: Fewer births, more deaths logged from Jan-Aug 2021 than same period in 2020

MANILA, Philippines — Fewer children were born, while more people were reported to have died in 2021 compared to the previous period last year, preliminary data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) revealed.

Data showed that 703,400 children were born from January to August 2021, compared to 981,270 births in the same period last year. This means that the first three quarters of 2021 recorded the fewest birth in 35 years for that period.

A total of 1,528,739 births were reported in the country for 2020, according to PSA.

FEATURED STORIES

Most births in the Philippines in 2020 averaged 100,000 a month, but most births occurred in September with 146,505 births.

More deaths were also reported in 2021 compared to the same period last year.

There were 486,401 recorded deaths from January to August in 2021, compared to 400,501 reported mortalities in the same period in 2020.

The total number of deaths in 2020 is 613,942.

Marriage

Despite the crisis brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, the PSA recorded more marriages compared to the same period last year.

There were 211,247 marriages from January to August 2021, compared to 147,536 during the same period last year.

The total number of marriages last year is at 240,775.
