MANILA, Philippines — Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Director-General Eric Domingo reported on Thursday that 106 of the 1,135 COVID-19 infections among individuals who received a COVID-19 vaccine have died.

“We have a total of, actually, 1,135 people who got COVID — people who were either partially or fully vaccinated — and 106 deaths na (who are) partially and fully vaccinated,” Domingo said during a virtual media forum.

“Pero ‘yung pattern bumababa. So, meaning, partially vaccinated, mas mataas ang mortality kaysa dun sa mga fully vaccinated na pababa nang pababa na halos zero,” he noted.

(But the pattern declines. So, meaning, those partially vaccinated have high mortality rate compared to those who are fully vaccinated which decreases to almost zero.)

Domingo’s presentation of adverse events following immunization showed that as of August 29, 732 individuals awaiting their second dose contracted COVID-19, 86 of which have died.

Data further revealed that 242 fully vaccinated individuals got COVID-19 more than 14 days after their last dose; of these, five have died.

Domingo shared that fatalities among fully inoculated individuals involve senior citizens and those with comorbidities.

“‘Yung the five cases, ‘yung age ‘yung range is parang (The ages of the five cases range from) 60 to 84-year-olds. All of them are senior citizens… but, two of them were diabetics. The other three have very little data,” he explained.

The FDA likewise listed 63 infections with unknown information on dosage and timing among immunized individuals. Ten of them have died.

Furthermore, Domingo assured that vaccines are effective and its benefits outweigh the risks.

“Pero ‘yung chance, ‘yung probability of a person who is vaccinated from getting COVID or dying from COVID drastically decreases. Kaya nga, kung ikaw naman ay pipili, tataya ka pa rin dun sa bakuna dahil nakikita talaga natin na meron talaga siyang protective effect,” he expressed.

(But the chance of a person who is vaccinated from getting COVID or dying from COVID drastically decreases. That’s why if you were asked, you would still take the vaccine because we can clearly see that there is a protective effect.)
