MANILA, Philippines — The Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) urged President Rodrigo Duterte to approve the proposal of pilot in-person classes in 120 schools chosen by the Department of Health, noting the government’s “alarming complacency” in addressing the problems faced by the education sector.

On Thursday, the Department of Education said they had yet to present the proposal at the next Cabinet meeting, and that it was still subject to the president’s approval.

“There is no doubt that we cannot further delay the resumption of in-classroom learning. We have seen how grave the learning loss is among our youth in just a year, we cannot afford to postpone the reopening of schools any longer than we already have,” Raymond Basilio, secretary general of ACT, said in a statement on Friday.
