Japan PM Suga declares state of COVID-19 emergency in Tokyo
TOKYO — Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga formally declared on Thursday a state of emergency in Tokyo, putting restrictions aimed at curbing coronavirus infections in place through August 22.
Suga said that the number of coronavirus infections was rising in the Tokyo area due partly to growing numbers of the Delta variant.
He also said thorough measures would be taken to prevent Olympic athletes from bringing the virus into Japan in connection with the Games, set to open in about two weeks.
