Soldier killed in Camarines Sur clash

LEGAZPI CITY – A soldier was killed in an encounter with suspected members of New People’s Army in Pasacao, Camarines Sur on Saturday afternoon, the local police said Sunday.

Police Colonel Bernardo Perez, Camarines Sur police chief, said Sergeant Norley Bare, 38, was killed in the five-minute firefight in Barangay Salvacion at around 1 p.m. when the Bravo Company of the 96th Infantry Battalion under the 9th Infantry Division of the Philippine Army, led by 1st Lieutenant Brylle Kay Iglesia, clashed with the suspected rebels while conducting combat operations at the remote village.

The rebels fled after the incident.

Perez said the victim sustained a gunshot wound to the back and expired en route to hospital in Naga City at around 4:20 p.m.
