11 of 138 NCR hospitals under ‘critical’ level — DOH

MANILA, Philippines — Eleven out of 138 hospitals in Metro Manila were tagged under the “critical” level in terms of bed capacity solely for COVID-19 patients, data from the Department of Health (DOH) as of Dec. 2 showed.

This figure increased from six hospitals recorded as “critical” last Nov. 27, consisting of 127 hospitals.

Of the hospitals under “critical” level, six have already reached 100 percent bed occupancy, namely:

E. Zarate Hospital
Mary Chiles General Hospital Inc.
Novaliches District Hospital
Philippine Children’s Medical Center

The DOH classifies occupancy levels for COVID-19 beds in health centers as either “critical”, “high risk”, “moderate” and “safe.”

Under the “critical” level, hospitals have already reached more than 85 percent of their bed occupancy for COVID-19 patients.

Hospitals are identified as “high risk” if 70 percent but not more than 85 percent of its COVID-19 beds are occupied.

Should hospitals have a 60 percent but not more than 70 percent rate for COVID-19 bed occupancy, they are classified under the “moderate” level.

And hospitals fall under the “safe” level if their bed utilization rate is less than 60 percent.

The bed occupancy rate for the whole of Metro Manila remains at the “safe” zone with 38 percent, or 2,612 out of the 6,881 total beds being occupied.

INQUIRER.net analyzed the most available data, which is on Dec. 2, 2020, based on the DOH’s COVID-19 tracker.

The article aims to show how prepared Metro Manila hospitals are if there is a sudden surge in COVID-19 infections. However, only hospitals in Metro Manila that have data on COVID-19 beds allocated for the treatment of coronavirus patients were included in this article.
