Driver claims he has COVID-19 to avoid ticket, gets charged
A 22-year-old driver in Ontario, Canada, is now facing charges after falsely claiming that he had COVID-19 to avoid being issued a traffic ticket.
Ontario Provincial Police caught the truck driver (name withheld) on a highway in Napanee yesterday, Nov. 17. They had him stop due to the vehicle’s unauthorized license plates, CTV News reported on the same day.
When the officers called paramedics to the scene, the driver quickly admitted that he did not have COVID-19.
Following the incident, police charged the driver with obstruction of an officer under the province’s Quarantine Act for making a false or misleading statement to an officer. According to the report, the driver also faces charges under the Highway Traffic Act.
Authorities noted as well that the driver only had a G1 license. People with a G1 license may only drive cars, vans or small trucks with an “accompanying fully licensed driver with at least four years driving experience,” according to Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation. Ryan Arcadio /ra
