/ 04:25 AM August 28, 2020

A detainee inside the Mandaluyong City police station was killed on Thursday while two police officers were wounded after he reportedly grabbed the gun of one of the victims and started shooting.

According to a police report sent to the Eastern Police District, Emerson Bernaldez was on his way to the toilet after being given permission when he took hold of the gun of Police Cpl. Michelle de Jesus and shot her in the arm. Another policewoman, Police Cpl. Shane Managtag, fired back and was hit in the abdomen.

City police chief Police Col. Hector Grijaldo Jr. said the suspect tried to escape by jumping from the second floor but he was chased by a third policeman, Police Staff Sgt. Daniel Gacho, who shot and killed him. Grijaldo said the suspect had been detained for a few days for alarm and scandal and seemed to be anxious and restless before the incident. —Jodee A. Agoncillo
