MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) sent out its condolences for the family of former Interior Secretary Alfredo Lim — who was, in this order, chief of the Quezon City Police,  chief of the Western (now Manila) Police District, director of the National Bureau of Investigation, mayor of Manila, before being appointed to the top post of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), and then senator.

According to a post by the PNP’s Public Information Office on Facebook, the whole police organization mourns the death of Lim on Saturday.

PNP also noted that Lim’s death coincides with the commemoration of the establishment of the country’s national police service, an institution he served in and guided when he headed the DILG.

Lim’s death was confirmed on Saturday after rumors spread last week that his health had been deteriorating.

Incumbent Manila Mayor Isko Moreno, who was once Lim’s vice mayor, said that the public servant died due to infection of the latest coronavirus strain.

Lim was 90.

Lim was known for his moniker “Dirty Harry” for his tough stance against crime and drugs.
