Ex-poll chair Brillantes intubated in Medical Center Manila due to COVID-19

MANILA, Philippines — Former Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman Sixto Brillantes Jr. was intubated at the Medical Center Manila on Saturday afternoon after testing positive for COVID-19.

“Given that his oxygen level is not stable despite all types of medication & convalescent plasma, his doctors found it best to intubate him this afternoon,” Zeena Brillantes, the former Comelec chair’s daughter, said via Facebook Messenger when asked about the condition of her father.

Zeena said her father was confined at the hospital on July 18 after showing signs of pneumonia. On July 22, test results confirmed that Brillantes as having COVID-19.

It was not immediately disclosed where Sixto contracted the new virus, Zeena added.

“Because he has been going to his office the past 2-3 weeks prior to hospitalization, we do not know where he contracted the virus,” she said.

In a public post, Zeena asked the public for prayers.

Brillantes was appointed as Comelec chair in 2011 by then-President Benigno Aquino III.
