DOH: COVID-19 cases in PH breach 18,000 mark; recoveries at 3,909

MANILA, Philippines — The total number of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases in the country has reached 18,086 as 862 more cases were confirmed, the Department of Health (DOH) reported Sunday.

Of the 862 confirmed cases, the DOH said 16 were classified as “fresh cases” or test results that were released to the patient within the last three days while 846 were late cases or test results that were released to the patient within the last four days or more.

Further, the DOH said 101 more patients recovered from the disease, bringing the total number of recoveries to 3,909.

The DOH said seven more people succumbed to the coronavirus disease, bringing the death toll to 957.

Meanwhile, of the recorded 18,086 cases, the DOH said 12,466 are deemed to be active cases and are further classified as follows: asymptomatic (680 cases), mild (11,713 cases), severe (55 cases), critical (18 cases).

COVID-19 is a respiratory illness caused by the novel coronavirus or SARS-CoV-2, which originated in Wuhan City in China’s Hubei Province in late 2019.

For most people, COVID-19 causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially in older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause pneumonia or death.
