Collapse of condo wall doesn’t affect building’s structural integrity — SMDC

MANILA, Philippines – The SM Development Corporation (SMDC) gave assurance that the collapse of a wall in one of its condominiums in Makati City Thursday has no effect on the building’s overall structural integrity.

SMDC said that their own structural consultant and building authorities from Makati City’s local government unit (LGU) entered the building on Thursday, hours after the incident.

“Following the incident of the detached ledge on the parking level of Jazz Mall, a thorough walkthrough of the mall premises and residential buildings was conducted by the structural consultant, Sysquared & Associates and representatives of the LGU of Makati,” SMDC said in a statement.

“It was concluded that the incident does not affect the structural integrity of the development and that the buildings are safe for occupancy,” they added.

Earlier, it was reported that the wall of the condominium unit’s parking area located along Nicanor Garcia corner Metropolitan Avenue collapsed.  While no casualties were reported, three persons were injured, while vehicles near the area were damaged.

Two of the injured individuals were drivers of the damaged vehicle. Makati City Police said the persons were rushed to the Makati Medical Center.

Earlier, SMDC confirmed that the parking slab collapsed down to the driveway.  They temporarily relocated residents of the said unit to the Metrpolitan Avenue while they were checking on the building.

SMDC assured that they are investigating the cause of the accident.

“We are relieved to report that, apart from two people who sustained minor abrasions, there were no casualties resulting from this event,” SMDC said.

“The cause of the incident is under investigation and we will take whatever measures necessary to address the situation and avoid any recurrence,” they added.
