BJMP chief visits QC Jail after 9 inmates test positive for coronavirus

MANILA, Philippines — The head of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) on Sunday inspected the Quezon City Jail after nine of its inmates tested positive for the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

In photos provided by the BJMP, jail director Allan Iral is shown visiting the Quezon City Jail Male Dormitory and the jail’s COVID-19 Isolation Center.

Previously, the BJMP reported that along with nine inmates at the QC Jail, nine employees of the BJMP have also contracted the coronavirus.

In response, the BJMP announced that it will be conducting a “random” COVID-19 testing of QC Jail inmates.

According to Iral, the nine persons deprived of liberty showed “positive progress” on their health as of Sunday morning.

One of the confirmed cases, who has a pre-existing medical condition, has been given medicine for hypertension, said Iral.

“Our doctors and nurses are working round the clock to provide medical care to the PDL patients for their immediate recovery,” Iral said. “We also ensure that our personnel who contracted the virus are receiving proper medical attention.”

Also joining the visit was Bureau of Fire Director Jose Embang, who helped the BJMP in the assessment of the situation at the Quezon City Jail as disaster response and infectious disease control expert.
