CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna, Philippines—At least 12 families lost their homes to a fire that razed a residential community in Dasmariñas City, Cavite, early Tuesday.

The fire started at around 5:30 a.m. and was put out an hour later, said Fire Officer 3 Juan Tapia of the Dasmariñas Fire Bureau.

In a phone interview, Tapia said the fire gobbled up shanties near a sewage canal in Barangay Paliparan 3. No one was reported hurt.

An initial report from the fire bureau said a lighted candle left unattended caused the fire.

Supt. Ulysses Cruz, Dasmariñas city police chief, said the city’s social welfare department took charge of the families’ relocation.
