Palace won’t pressure Corona to resign, leaves fate to Senate

MANILA, Philippines—Malacañang will no longer pressure Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona to resign, a Radyo Inquirer 990AM report said Thursday.

They will leave Corona’s fate to the Senate which is set to stand as an Impeachment Court beginning January 16, Malacañang Spokesman Edwin Lacierda was quoted as saying.

Malacañang will stop pressuring Corona in order to avoid being accused as arrogant and presumptive, the report said.

The House of Representatives impeached Corona after 188 solons signed the complaint on December 12 last year.

The impeachment complaint was based on alleged betrayal of public trust, culpable violation of the constitution, and graft and corruption of the Chief Justice.

Malacañang said in the report they will welcome Corona should he decide to file a voluntary resignation like former Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez.

Gutierrez resigned on April 29 last year after the House of Representatives voted to impeach her over alleged betrayal of public trust a month earlier. Matikas Santos, INQUIRER.net
