Black man kidnaps woman, forces her to watch series on slavery to make her ‘understand racism’
An African American man kidnapped a woman in Iowa, United States and forced her to watch “Roots”, a 1970s television miniseries tackling slavery, so she could “better understand her racism.”
Robert Lee Noye, 52, was arrested yesterday, Feb. 17 in Cedar Rapids, as per local paper The Gazette on the same day. A criminal complaint showed that Noye threatened the woman (name withheld) with violence if she refused to watch the said series.
The complaint stated that the man told the woman to “remain seated and watch the movie with him or he would kill her and spread her body parts across Interstate 380 on the way to Chicago,” according to the report.
“Roots”, released in 1977, was a nine-hour miniseries based on author Alex Haley’s 1976 novel titled “Roots: The Saga of an African Family”. It tells the story of how Haley’s ancestor, 18th century African Kunta Kinte, was abducted from his village and sold into slavery in the U.S. The story goes all the way down to how the bloodline reached the author himself.
Noye is now facing first degree harassment and false imprisonment charges, as per report. Ian Biong/JB
