Tagbilaran dump ordered closed for violation of solid waste law

TAGBILARAN CITY –– The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has ordered the temporary closure of the Tagbilaran open dump on Wednesday.

Benny Antiporda, undersecretary for solid waste of the DENR, issued a cease-and-desist order (CDO) after he found out that the dump operations violated the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.

“It remains an open dump until now,” Antiporda said, referring to the 2.6-hectare dump in Barangay Dampas, which was closed in 2017 in compliance with the Ecological Solid Waste Management Law.

Open dumps have been prohibited by law after the passage of Republic Act 9003 (Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000).

Cathelyn Ontong-Torremocha, city administrator, received the order.
