MANILA, Philippines — A Chinese fugitive involved in economic crimes in China was arrested in Makati City, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) reported Monday.

The bureau said 32-year-old Chen Long, who lives under the alias Chen Chenglong, was arrested last October 30 following a report from Chinese authorities.

Chen, along with a cohort, duped more than P400 million from his victims after setting up an unregistered investment company in Shandong province in China.

Further, Chen’s passport has also been cancelled by Chinese authorities, making him an undocumented alien in the Philippines.

“Upon receipt of the information, we immediately conducted a case build up and determined his location to effect his arrest,” Bobby Raquepo, head of the immigration’s Fugitive Search Unit (FSU), said in a statement.

Chen is now at the BI Detention Center in Bicutan, Taguig while he await his deportation.

“The FSU has been doing a good job in ensuring that we rid of fugitives hiding in the Philippines,” BI Commissioner Jaime Morente said.

“This, of course, is not possible without the cooperation of our foreign counterparts who send us information about wanted criminals in their countries that may be hiding in ours,” he added. /je
