Mangyan gunned down in Oriental Mindoro town

CITY OF CALAPAN–A Mangyan was gunned down by an unidentified assailant on Wednesday afternoon in Bulalacao town in Oriental Mindoro, police said Thursday.

Laurel Malucon, a member of the indigenous Hanunuo Mangyan tribe and resident of Sitio (sub-village) Umabang in Barangay (village) Benli, was fatally shot at about 4:30 p.m., a report from the Mimaropa police said.

Police said they received a call from the Philippine Army’s 4th Infantry Battalion based in the area about an indiscriminate firing at Sitio Napisian in Barangay Cambunang at around 5 p.m. Responding policemen found Malucon dead.

Investigation revealed that Malucon was walking on his way home in the mountainous area when the assailant fired on him, killing the tribesman instantly.

Recovered from the crime scene were three pieces of fired cartridge case of caliber .45 gun. Police are still investigating the incident.
