More than 200 rogue cops charged with criminal complaints — PNP-IMEG

MANILA, Philippines — More than 200 rogue policemen are facing criminal complaints from February 3, 2017 to September 11, 2019, Philippine National Police’s Integrity Monitoring and Enforcement Group (IMEG) said.

Based on its latest data, the PNP-IMEG filed criminal complaints against 250 erring law enforcers. Twenty-three are police commissioned officers, 226 are police non-commissioned officers and one non-uniformed personnel.

Of the 250 cases filed, 124 criminal cases were filed against arrested law enforcers while 126 cases are filed through regular filing and was referred to the Department of Justice.

PNP-IMEG, however, did not disclose details of the 126 cases filed via regular filing.

The PNP-IMEG, activated on June 15 this year, is tasked to run after rogue policemen as part of PNP’s intensified internal cleansing of its ranks.

Only 3 percent with drug-related cases

Despite the controversial “ninja cops” issue, only three percent of these arrested policemen are facing drug-related cases.

PNP-IMEG said two out 124 arrested policemen were charged for violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.

The task group likewise said 82 or 67 percent arrested law enforcers were involved in robbery-extortion cases, followed by 13 policemen or 11 percent faced kidnapping cases.

Only one arrested PNP personnel was charged for slight physical injury.

Of the 124 arrested policemen, 113 are police non-commissioned officers and 10 are police commissioned officers.

Of the number, 31 percent has the rank of patrolman while 23 percent has the rank of a police corporal. /je
