Goncalvez was already waiting at the altar when he found out about her situation. He rushed to her side and she was able to tell him that she had severe pain in the back of her neck. Goncalvez, a firefighter, said he still felt she had a heartbeat while they were together.

When they arrived at the hospital, Guedes was declared brain dead. It was determined that she suffered from preeclampsia, a life-threatening disorder characterized by a rise in blood pressure that could cause a stroke.

Guedes had internal bleeding and doctors hurried to save her baby who was born at 29 weeks. Baby Sophia is staying at a neonatal intensive care unit, since she was born prematurely.

Goncalvez shared a video of him on Instagram cradling baby Sophia on Monday, Sept. 16.

He wrote, “I always saw in you an excellent mother; you taught me how to treat a woman. I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU.”

The food prepared for the reception was donated to children in an impoverished community. The bridegroom and the bride’s family donated Guedes’ organs. According to Goncalvez, his bride worked in a blood bank and advocated organ donation. Niña V. Guno /ra
