77-year-old convict freed under GCTA surrenders in Laguna
SAN PEDRO CITY — A 77-year-old man convicted of murder but released through the Good Conduct Time Allowance (GCTA) law surrendered to authorities in Alaminos, Laguna, police said Sunday.
A report from the regional police office said Reynaldo Olazo’s family fetched him from Norzagaray, Bulacan where he had lived since his release from the New Bilibid Prison on May 1.
On Saturday, around 6 a.m., they went back to the police station in Alaminos, the family’s hometown, to turn Olazo in.
Convicts freed through the GCTA have continued to “surrender” in accordance with a directive by President Rodrigo Duterte.
The GCTA became controversial following allegations of corruption and irregularities in the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor).
The Alaminos police said they would turn Olazo over to Bucor’s custody. /je
