Earthquake drill for the “Big One.”

MANILA, Philippines – Various government offices across the country on Thursday participated in the nationwide earthquake drill organized by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and Philippine Institute for Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

According to Phivolcs, these drills are in preparation for large earthquakes, like the expected “Big One” quake, which would be triggered by a movement in the Marikina Valley Fault System.

“DOST-Phivolcs reminds the public that any active faults that have not generated, historical surface-rupturing events have higher potential to generate a large earthquake also known as ‘The Big One,’ which can significantly affect different areas in the Philippines,” Phivolcs said in a message.

“Hence, everyone should be preparing for it. One way to prepare is to participate in the second quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) […] The NSED promotes earthquake awareness and preparedness among members of the community,” it added.
