MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) will remain vigilant against crime after the generally peaceful celebration of the 121st Independence Day on Wednesday.

“The PNP remains alert and vigilant to prevent crimes [and will be] ready to respond to any emergency or call for assistance,” PNP spokesman Col. Bernard Banac said in a message to reporters.

Banac said the PNP did not receive any reports of untoward incidents on Independence Day, but they monitored minor rallies in Makati and Manila.

“Minor protest rallies by sectoral groups were monitored near the US Embassy in Manila and the Chinese Embassy in Makati City,” Banac said.

The Southern Police District reported that about 400 people from Gabriela Party-list, Kabataan Party-list, Anakbayan Party-list, and Anakpawis joined the protest at the Chinese Embassy at around 11 a.m. (Editor: Eden Estopace)
