MANILA, Philippines — Members of Akbayan party-list gathered in front of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) in Pasay City on Thursday to protest incidents of Chinese incursions in the West Philippine Sea.

The group in particular slammed the reported poaching of giant clams by Chinese fishermen from the waters of Scarborough Shoal.

The reported poaching prompted the DFA to send a diplomatic note to China and to warn of legal action for its alleged violation of “conventions on environmental protection.”

The protest action comes as President Rodrigo Duterte attends the Second Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation in Beijing and hold bilateral meetings with Chinese leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The protesters will also be calling on the President to confront Xi over China’s alleged West Philippine Sea incursions. /muf
