ZAMBOANGA CITY — A father and son are still in critical condition after they hacked each other on Monday night in Barangay Latuan, some 52.8 km from here.

Police Major Helen Galvez, regional police spokesperson, said Jelvie Bello Manalo, 19, a farmer and his stepfather, Angel Bucoy Bernardo, 41, were both rushed to a nearby Cristino Paragas Hospital and later moved to Zamboanga City Medical Center due to the serious wounds they incurred.

Galvez said Bernardo, who was intoxicated, had stormed the house of the Manalo brothers at Sitio Candiis of Barangay Latuan at past 9 p.m. on Monday and hacked Jelvie on his neck and head.

But Jelvie’s elder brother Gerdie, who saw the attack, tried to disarm his stepfather but after disarming, also hacked his stepfather several times.

Gerdie had surrendered to the police after the incident and turned over the bolo used by his stepfather.

Investigators later found the Manalo brothers strongly opposed to the marriage of their mother to Bernardo and that both brothers were reportedly “badmouthing” him.
