NBI arrests man wanted for murder of fellow Filipino worker in South Korea

MANILA, Philippines — A Filipino man was arrested in Candaba, Pampanga for the murder of a Filipino worker in South Korea, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) said Thursday.

NBI Director Dante Gierran said the suspect, identified as Yugoslav Magtoto, was arrested on Tuesday for the alleged murder of fellow Filipino worker Angelo Camen Claveria while they were both employed as factory workers in South Korea.

Claveria was declared missing in 2016 before his skeletal remains were found inside a septic tank in April 2018. DNA tests conducted by South Korean authorities matched the victim’s DNA with that of his mother’s.

According to the NBI, Magtoto became angry after Claveria rejected his show affection. The NBI said the rejection lead Magtoto to lure Claveria to a paint factory where the murder happened.

“By taking advantage of the victim’s submissive personality, [the suspect] lured the victim out to the vicinity of DOIL Industrial Technologies Co., Ltd., a paint factory and allegedly murdered the victim in an unknown way,” the NBI said in a statement.

Following the murder, Magtoto allegedly stole Claveria’s belongings and withdrew P47,600 from the victim’s debit card before leaving South Korea and arriving in the Philippines on May 9, 2016.

The Manila Regional Trial Court Branch 20 approved the provisional arrest warrant against Magtoto on Monday leading to the suspect’s arrest the following day.

Magtoto is currently under the custody of NBI while waiting for his extradition to South Korea where he will face charges for murder. /muf
