DID YOU KNOW: Women’s Week, Women’s Rights and International Peace Day

Women’s Week is celebrated every first week of March while Women’s Rights and International Peace Day is observed every March 8 by virtue of Proclamation No. 224 signed on March 1, 1988 by then President Corazon Aquino.

March 8 was also declared National Women’s Day by virtue of Republic Act 6949 which was signed in 1990.

Based on the latest census released by the Philippine Statistics Authority, 49.4 percent (49.91 million) of the population were female.

The only regions that reported more females than males were the National Capital Region and Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

In Metro Manila, there were 6.51 million females and 6.37 million males. —Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
