Taiwan teen gets 30-year sentence in gang murder

TAIPEI– A Taiwanese teenager has been handed a 30-year jail term for the fatal shooting of a gang boss in the longest sentence handed down in a juvenile case on the island, a court said Friday.

Liao Kuo-hao, 19, was previously sentenced to 25 years in jail by a district court for killing the gang boss and his friend last year and for attempted murder in a separate 2009 shooting of a restaurant owner.

The high court on Thursday increased the sentence due to what it called his “lack of remorse” and imposed a fine of Tw$1.2 million ($40,000) in a final ruling, according to the verdict.

Liao attained national notoriety after he reportedly fired 16 gunshots at the gang boss at the bidding of another mob leader in an incident that also wounded a police officer.
