DID YOU KNOW: Feast of the Black Nazarene

05:00 AM January 09, 2019

The Feast of the Black Nazarene is celebrated every Jan. 9 in commemoration of the transfer (traslacion) of the wooden Christ from a Recollect church in Intramuros, Manila, where it was first enshrined, to St. John the Baptist Church in Quiapo, Manila, in 1787.

The image survived the fires that engulfed Quiapo Church in 1791 and 1929, the great earthquakes of 1645 and 1863, and the 1945 bombing of Manila during World War II.

Last year, around 4.5 million devotees joined the procession that lasted 22 hours. —Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
