4 hurt in NPA attack in Sorsogon town police station

LEGAZPI CITY – A civilian and three policemen were wounded after suspected New People’s Army rebels attacked the police station in Magallanes town, Sorsogon on Monday night, police said.

Supt. Alejandro M. Monge II, Sorsogon police spokesperson, said PO1 Rolan Geul, PO1 Sonny Son Estera, and PO1 Melvin Bartolata and a civilian identified only as “Luigi,” suffered bullet wounds after 16 rebels fired at the police station in Barangay Poblacion around 7:30 p.m.

The four were in stable condition after being brought to Magallanes Medicare Hospital in Magallanes and Sorsogon Medical Mission Group Hospital in Sorsogon City.

Monge said police were able to retaliate after the attack and the firefight lasted for 10 minutes before the suspected rebels withdrew to Banacud village, then towards Juban town.

“(The rebels) positioned themselves in front and at the back of the police station,” Monge said in a statement released to the media.

Sorsogon police also called on the community to be vigilant and to report to the nearest police station any information regarding the presence of the rebel group.
