CHR wants gov’t to intensify efforts to deliver justice for all EJK victims
Even as Commission on Human Rights (CHR) chair Chito Gascon hailed the conviction of three policemen involved in Kian Delos Santos’ murder, he called on the government to still “step up their efforts” in helping victims of extrajudicial killings (EJKs).
“We call on the government to step up their efforts in delivering justice for all victims of EJKs by ensuring that all perpetrators are apprehended and charged,” he said in a statement on Thursday.
Gascon’s remark came after Caloocan City Regional Trial Court Branch 125 found PO3 Arnel Oares, PO1 Jeremias Pereda and PO1 Jerwin Cruz guilty of killing Delos Santos in August 2017.
The CHR head also thanked those who helped secure justice for Delos Santos, including “the courageous eye witnesses, the church workers, and human rights defenders who offered sanctuary, and the investigators and prosecutors who performed their duty.”
On Thursday morning, the lower court sentenced Oares, Pereda, and Cruz to reclusion perpetua without eligibility of parole for the death of Delos Santos. /kga
