LOOK: Political families vying for seats in the 2019 polls

Politics in the Philippines is a family affair, with many prominent names again coming to the fore with the advent of the 2019 midterm elections.

As the filing of certificate of candidacy (COC) comes to an end, following is a quick list of some families whose members have filed their COCs to run for office next year:

Duterte

President Rodrigo Duterte’s youngest son Baste Duterte filed his certificate of candidacy (COC) as Davao City Vice Mayor on Wednesday.

He will be running with sister and incumbent Mayor of Davao City Sara Duterte who also filed her COC this week, seeking reelection.

Both of them will run under Sara’s regional party Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP).

Their brother and former Davao vice mayor Paolo Duterte also filed his COC as representative of Davao’s 1st district last Friday (Oct. 12).

Revilla

Detained former senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla on Wednesday filed his COC through his wife, Bacoor Mayor Lani Mercado before the Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Wednesday.

Mercado is seeking a second term as mayor of Bacoor City, Cavite after filing her COC last Friday (Oct. 12).

Their son and incumbent Cavite Vice Governor Jolo Revilla also filed his COC before the Trece Martirez Comelec office on Monday. Revilla is seeking reelection as vice governor of Cavite for his last term.

Binay

Incumbent Makati Mayor Abby Binay is running against her brother, Junjun, for the city’s mayoral post in next year’s election after filing her COC on Wednesday.

She was accompanied by father and former Vice President Jejomar Binay.

Former Makati mayor Jejomar “Junjun” Binay Jr. also filed his COC on Tuesday as he eyes a comeback as Makati mayor.

Meanwhile, Senator Nancy Binay filed her COC last Friday, Oct. 12, seeking reelection in the Senate.

Villar

Reelectionist Senator Cynthia Villar filed on Monday her certificate of candidacy (COC) before the Comelec headquarters.

She was accompanied by husband, former-Senator Manny Villar and daughter Camille Villar, who also filed her COC as Las Piñas City representative.

Camille’s brother Mark Villar formerly served as Las Piñas representative but resigned when he was appointed as secretary of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in 2016.

Mark’s wife Diwa Rep. Em Aglipay-Villar designated by then House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez as “caretaker” of the vacated district.

Cayetano

Taguig City’s 2nd District Rep. Pia Cayetano filed on Tuesday her COC eyeing for a Senate seat. She is a deputy speaker at the House of Representatives.

Her brother Alan Peter Cayetano has quit his post as Foreign Affairs secretary and is running as Taguig representative.

Alan Peter’s spouse Lani Cayetano is a former congresswoman and the incumbent mayor of Taguig City.

Pia and Alan Peter’s brother film director Lino Cayetano also filed his COC on Monday as mayoralty bet of Taguig City.

Ejercito-Estrada

Incumbent San Juan City Vice Mayor Janella Estrada filed her COC on Tuesday as a candidate for the city’s mayorship.

She was accompanied by father, former Senator Jinggoy Estrada who also filed his own COC for the senatorial race on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Estrada’s brother Senator Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito filed his COC on Monday to seek a second term as senator.

JV’s mother, actress and businesswoman Guia Gomez is the present mayor of San Juan City. Jinggoy and JV both previously served as mayors of San Juan City.

Marcos

Ilocos Norte Gov. Imee Marcos filed her COC on Tuesday for the senatorial race. The eldest daughter of the late strongman Ferdinand Marcos will run under the Nacionalista Party banner.

She was accompanied to the Comelec main office by her brother, former senator Bongbong Marcos and mother Imelda Marcos who also plans to run as representative for the 2nd district of Ilocos Norte.

Meanwhile, Matthew Marcos Manotoc, Imee’s son and board member of Ilocos Norte’s 2nd District, filed his COC on Monday for vice governor of the province.

He was accompanied by Imee’s cousin and incumbent Vice Governor of Ilocos Norte, Angelo Marcos Barba, who also filed his COC as representative of Ilocos Norte’s 2nd district. /cbb/muf
